In 1930, David Yancey Thomas (1872-1943), a noted Arkansas historian, published this lovely four-volume set. The first two volumes are a solid political, social, and economic history of the state, including capsule histories of the counties and major cities. Volumes three and four contain biographical sketches of more than a thousand prominent Arkansas folks. The books were unfortunately printed on heavily-acidic paper that didn't age well. Many librarians have pulled these from the stacks because they're literally crumbling away. A brief trip to the copy machine by a rabid genealogist can cause brittle leaves to detach.
